About Providence Neighborhood Planting Program
Since 1989 the Providence Neighborhood Planting Program (PNPP) has engaged residents and community organizations in planting and stewarding trees across Providence, in order to increase city-wide tree canopy and cultivate a more robust and equitable urban forest. By strengthening Providence’s network of urban forest stewards and advocates, we work towards a future where everyone in Providence can enjoy the benefits of healthy trees where they live, work, learn and play. Our work is rooted in collaboration, partnership, and shared ownership. For more than 35 years, we have partnered with the City Forestry Division to run spring and fall Neighborhood Street Tree Plantings, splitting their cost 50/50. To date, we’ve planted over 16,000 street trees in this way—more than half the street trees currently in Providence! Our community-driven planting model gives residents agency to decide where they want trees and cultivates skills and stakeholdership within our communities. We also facilitate community urban forest stewardship by training Providence Community Tree Keepers to prune and maintain young trees and co-administering Garden Time’s Canopy Crew program. As a core partner in the creation of the PVD Tree Plan, PNPP helped develop a collaborative vision and roadmap for achieving tree equity in Providence. Since the release of the Tree Plan in 2023, we have made an organizational commitment to grow into a collaborative hub for urban forestry across the city—formalizing and expanding our role in convening & coordinating partners, facilitating community-based governance models, and activating city-wide urban forestry networks.
