About Randolph Research
Randolph Research invented the concept of high-load rubber laminate bearings and developed the first application, helicopter blade retention. Unlike ball or roller bearings which tend to fail quickly, laminated rubber bearings have proven to be reliable and have become the norm. In addition to helicopters, small wind-turbines and industrial uses, possible applications for LAMIFLEX Bearing-Seals include AUVs, ROVs and other types of submersibles. . For submersibles, the recently developed LAMIFLEX Bearing Seal (concept shown in the drawing above, having no sliding surfaces) provides a hermetic seal and bearing for use in a high hydrostatic pressure environment, and could be used in the design of all types of submersibles where it may be advantageous to do control and actuation from within an air environment. The shaft can safely penetrate the hull without concern for seawater corrosion. (See a You Tube demo on our website under "Recent Paper".) The LAMIFLEX Bearing Seal was developed to deal with very high compressive loads (tested at 10,000 psi and more) and limited angles of motion with small size, reasonable cost and no lubrication. And, having negligible friction, they require only a small torque proportional to the angle of motion.
