About Red Herrings | Nazaré

Team Red Herrings, a rising force in Big Wave Surfing, was founded by Francisco Roque de Pinho and Lourenço Katzenstein in the legendary waters of Nazaré, Portugal. Despite a twenty-one-year age difference, Francisco and Lourenço joined forces in 2017 to take on the giant waves generated by the notorious Nazaré Canyon. Season after season, they have honed their skills driving jet skis, tow surfing, rescuing each other, and surviving the relentless, heavy waters of Praia do Norte. Alongside their Nazaré pursuits, they have also explored lesser-known big waves along the Iberian coast, making a couple of discoveries that remain undisclosed. In 2022, Francisco and Lourenço established Associação Red Herrings, a not-for-profit organisation, with the invaluable support of Smile Wave Fund, a Swiss philanthropic organisation focused on the ocean. Since then, Team Red Herrings has welcomed in its ranks the talents of Tomás Lacerda, a twenty-year old stand-up paddle professional APP World Tour contestant and rising star in Big Wave Surfing hailing from Madeira, and Haroldo Hambrosio, a seasoned Brazilian big wave veteran with two decades of experience surfing Pe’ahi (aka Jaws) in Hawaii, the birthplace of tow surfing. Team Red Herrings aims to challenge the Big Wave Surfing paradigm by departing from its traditionally individualistic, ego-driven approach, focusing instead on teamwork excellence to achieve disproportionate performance and collective success in dramatically risky environments. The team's mission extends beyond the pursuit of sporting achievement and encompasses pressing social and environmental issues that resonate deeply with its members.
