About Red Poppy
Red Poppy is dedicated to promoting the power of Latin American poetry to not only evoke emotions, but to shift social consciousness, sparking both individual and collective change. We just published a multilingual anthology Resistencia: Poems of Protest and Revolution. It is a book that goes to the heart of our mission as a non-profit. With a powerful and poignant introduction from Julia Alvarez, Resistencia is rooted in a strong tradition of protest poetry and voiced by icons of the movement and some of the most exciting writers today. The poets of Resistencia explore feminist, queer, Indigenous, and ecological themes alongside historically prominent protests against imperialism, dictatorships, and economic inequality. Within this momentous collection, poets representing every Latin American country grapple with identity, place, and belonging, resisting easy definitions to render a nuanced and complex portrait of language in rebellion. Included in English translation alongside their original language, its poems are a testament to the art of translation as much as the act of resistance. An all-star team of translators have made many of the poems available for the first time to an English-speaking audience. "A groundbreaking collection... Resistencia is alive with bravery, feminism, strength, agency, protest, power and hope." – Ms. Magazine "A stunning collection of revelations and witness...Indispensable." – Luis Alberto Urrea available at your favorite independent bookstore, or at https://bookshop.org/shop/RedPoppy We are also completing a documentary film on the life, poetry, and social commitment of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. It is an up-close, visually poetic portrait of the complex man behind some of the world’s most popular and enduring poems. Julia Alvarez wrote on seeing excerpts from the film-in-progress, “This documentary will give us our Neruda, vigorously, diversely, enchantingly brought back to life.” please visit redpoppy.net
