About Reentry Sisters
We are a 501c3 organization that assists female returning citizens transitioning from prison to society by re-establishing their connections to community and family through systems of support. We help build and maintain self-esteem, self-respect, and self-sufficiency by providing a gender-responsive approach to reentry. Prisons are built by and for men. While women comprise a small percentage of incarcerated people, the number of women behind bars has sharply increased. Most women in prison are trauma survivors and many struggle with substance use. Upon release from prison, women face the same hurdles as men in acquiring housing, employment, transportation, and reunification with family members. Women face additional hardships in their social roles as heads of household, primary caretakers of children and elderly parents, and nurturers of our communities. While many men return to mothers, wives, and girlfriends, women often choose between homelessness or returning to the abusive homes that drove them into prison. Once released, services typically ignore the unique challenges faced by women, doubly harmed by the stigma of their conviction history. The criminal legal system perpetuates injustice based on gender, and gender oppression is compounded by societal labels of being bad mothers or abandoning her family, making a successful recovery from incarceration nearly impossible without social support from women who have successfully transitioned. Our Sisterhood is a brave space to seek help, provide resources, and sustain a life free of the carceral system, family policing organizations, and unhealthy relationships. We support retaining vital connections, building social capital, acquiring safe and affordable housing, and living wage jobs. Every Sister is critical to the survivor of the next. Together, we create a world where all women and girls are safe, supported, and empowered to live their best life.
