About Regional Theatre Young Director Scheme (RTYDS)
RTYDS is the UK's longest running training scheme for directors and theatre makers, developing their skills and experience as artists and artistic directors of the future and working in partnership with regional producing theatres to deliver our programmes. We are particularly focused on directors who live outside of London and who are from marginalised backgrounds and communities. Founded in 1960, the scheme has helped launch the careers of many of Britain’s leading Artistic Directors and freelance directors including Rupert Goold (Almeida), Elizabeth Newman (Sheffield Theatres), Vicky Featherstone (Royal Court), Natalie Ibu (Northern Stage), Matthew Xia (Actors Touring Company), Jack McNamara (Live Theatre); freelance directors include John Tiffany, Adele Thomas and Rebecca Frecknall. We are currently running Fair Play, a new nationwide change programme to tackle socio-economic inequity in theatre. Our ambition is to support creatives who are working class or from low socio-economic backgrounds and to support regional theatres to use their own power to tackle this inequity. Fair Play is built on our learning which tells us that to make impactful change you have work on three levels: • tailor opportunities for artists to develop artistic skills and leadership experience • partner with organisations to challenge their practice • introduce new models of working that ripple out to impact the sector.
