Welcome. You’ve either just been promoted into engineering management, or you’ve made some choices that led you here. Either way, condolences. Reluctant Leadership is a newsletter for people leading software teams who didn’t exactly dream of people management as a career goal. You probably wanted to build elegant systems and ship cool products. Instead, you’re now running 1:1s, doing performance reviews and being mistaken for a therapist. And while I didn’t set out to become a manager, I think I’ve got a handle on the often-uncomfortable, sometimes-rewarding, surprisingly common-sense work of helping people do their best work without burning out or blowing up. I'm not a thought leader. I'm an engineer who got good at leadership the hard way… by doing it.
