Food waste generates around 3.3 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions worldwide every year. REPLOID addresses this problem with a concrete, scalable nutrient upcycling approach that converts waste streams into regional value creation. Plug-and-play ReFarmUnits convert over 9,500 tonnes of organic waste into insect proteins, fats and fertilisers/biostimulants every year. Compared to the status quo, each installed RFU saves several tonnes of CO2 equivalents. CO2 reduction can be achieved across the entire process chain to the market-ready product. This results in marketable, regional products such as animal feed components, biostimulants, fertilisers and sustainable fats for chemical applications and energy sources, while at the same time avoiding emissions, landfill and incineration. Value creation is deliberately organised on a regional basis: cooperation with local producers, suppliers and customers minimises transport distances, increases security of supply and strengthens regional cycles. Unlike conventional protein sources, production does not require fertile farmland, feed imports or monocultures – instead, every crop is a CO2 sink and ensures biodiversity. The approach fulfils key objectives of the Green Deal, supports the regional circular economy and prepares companies for the European Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) by providing low-carbon, EU-regional products as an alternative to imported, emission-intensive raw materials.
