About Research at Leicester's Hospitals
University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust is one of the biggest research and teaching hospitals in England. At any one time, we have around 950 active research studies, and recruit around 12,000 people to take part every year. Our research is world-class: we are recognised as a leading centre for many health conditions, such as diabetes, cancer, and lung and heart diseases. We are fortunate to have the experts and equipment to drive positive changes in many branches of medicine, and receive large investments from the UK Government to make sure we can continue to deliver research for the benefit of patients. We host one of 20 National Institute for Health and Social Care Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centres (BRCs), one of 28 NIHR Clinical Research Facilities, and one of only 5 NIHR Patient Recruitment Centres (PRCs) in the country. Together these are at the frontier of research into illnesses linked to respiratory conditions, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and the consequences of inactivity, cancer, the impacts of environment on health and health inequalities. Our overall purpose is to translate scientific breakthroughs made in early to late phase experimental medicine into diagnostic tests, preventions and life-saving treatments for our patients. We support capacity building through partnership with industry and the third sector. We have created a collaborative workspace that allows a multidisciplinary team of scientists and clinicians to share their findings and deliver research that is relevant to patients and the professionals who treat them. As a large acute NHS trust with world-renowned university partners, together we have a proven track record of working with industry partners, from small and medium enterprises to multinational pharmaceutical companies. Through our training and development programme, we foster talent from all backgrounds and health disciplines to become the next generation of researchers.
