About Reuse Scotland SCIO

Reuse Scotland SCIO (RS) was created to continue the legacy of Miixer CIC, a Social Enterprise which developed from the Zero Waste Scotland funded Zero Waste Town project. Miixer CIC’s mission was to experiment with different retail models and maximise the diversion of materials from landfill for community benefit. Over the course of 5 years Miixer trialled a variety of retail models and initiatives with the intention of disrupting the reuse market in Scotland. These initiatives share common attributes: • Plug and play • Stand-alone profitably • Work to scale • Easily replicable • Massive diverters of carbon RS’s main activity is the diversion of reusable materials from landfill for community benefit; through sale at affordable prices or donation to those in need/at risk, or to 3rd Sector and community focused groups in East Lothian. RS receives no external funding and operates purely upon traded income. Except for during the pandemic, Miixer CIC, and now RS have experienced annual growth of over 50%. In the FY2021/2 Miixer CIC/RS diverted 1298t of reusable materials from landfill, of which over 245t of materials were donated to schools, charities, social enterprises, community groups, with a further 183t donated to individuals (many of whom may considered to be at risk). Gross Profit was 98% with Net Profit over 15%. RS is a Real Living Wage employer. Surpluses are reinvested into expanding reuse operations across the region, job creation, and towards local donations of materials. Our long-term aim is to create a world-class Reuse Hub where all our initiatives can be housed under one roof. Reuse Scotland works in partnership with Local Authorities and large Corporates. In East Lothian there are Reuse Sheds and textile banks at all HWRCs, with expansion into Edinburgh due in 2023, following a successful trial at Seafield HWRC.
