About Rio Grande Food Project
Rio Grande Food Project (RGFP) envisions a world where everyone has plentiful, nutritious food. RGFP's mission is to alleviate hunger and cultivate long-term food security in our communities. A food pantry, urban garden and community hub, RGFP is the largest food pantry on Albuquerque's west side, distributing food to over 775 kids, adults and seniors every week. Hunger is a chronic condition in New Mexico with 1 in 4 children experiencing hunger and RGFP works to address this crisis. Our Community Hub assists guests beyond immediate food needs to help maximize their budgets and create long-term stability. Pathways to employment through computer literacy and job training opportunities, electric and water bill assistance, Medicare, Medicaid, SNAP (food stamps) enrollment support, emergency cell phone services, nutrition education, financial literacy, mental health services and children's literacy all aim to cultivate long-term food security. Our Urban Garden is a space to grow, connect, volunteer and learn. In 2021 RGFP: Distributed 15,034 food boxes (548,160 meals) including 13,312 pounds of food SHARED with partnering organizations (Albuquerque Family Advocacy Center, Centro Sávila, and Southwest Mesa Clinic) who distribute food directly to harder-to-reach populations; Assisted 4,148 households with $652,827 in electricity bill grants in partnership with PNM's Good Neighbor Fund; Distributed $144,645 to 613 households in water bill assistance grants in partnership with the Albuquerque Bernalillo Water Utility Authority; Shared 7,899 community service resources and educational materials through our Community Hub; Offered on-site public benefit enrollment services for SNAP (food stamps), LIHEAP (utility assistance), and RENTHELPNM (housing assistance) applications; Grew 21 different fruits and vegetables in our Urban Garden and shared 100% of the harvest with our food pantry guests.
