About Rip Space

Started in January 2024, Rip Space is a new media / art x tech / exploratory hacker space with an ambitious programming schedule. We operate out of a loft space in DTLA featuring a 13’ x 8’ transparent configurable LED screen that is an invitation for artist experimentation and collaboration – alongside a growing media library of new and retro tech. Founded by John Threat (hacker / futurist) and Vera Petukhova (curator) and run collectively with programming support from Maisa Imamović (theorist / educator) -- the space is a platform for exhibitions, events, workshops, talks, and gatherings that center media, technology and emerging paradigms. Our events are free and offer a space for the LA community to gather, build ideas, and converge on expanded notions of the technological. Rip Space is dedicated to showcasing new media, digital art, multi-media installations, performance, and expanded sensory work.We are driven towards expanding conversation in the cultural sphere of art x tech and exploration on emergent topics. Our exhibitions and programs are created in collaboration and in process with artists. In addition to exhibiting artists' work, we also host artist talks, skill share workshops, community gatherings, screenings, symposiums and other discursive events. The name is a flip on WIP or work in process, RIP or riot in process is a platform where process, ideation, and experimentation override product and finalization + the spirit of riotous disobedience and disorder. Rip Space predicates process over product, where the act of breaking, bending, or reimagining is more important than outcomes. Hacking here cultivates collaborative disruption, where technology, art, and human interaction fuse to challenge normative structures, create hybrid realities, and push communal knowledge forward.
