About Rise Above Yoga

Rise Above Yoga (RAY) is an organization based in Madison, Wisconsin. We offer trauma-informed yoga for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals, and justice-impacted communities. We have several long-standing, successful programs at the Dane County Jail and future program opportunities at Oakhill Correction Institute, and are actively seeking dedicated volunteer yoga teachers. Rise Above Yoga (RAY) works in partnership with the Prison Yoga Project (PYP). PYP offers high quality training to our facilitators and an outstanding network of practitioners that offer similar trauma informed yoga & mindfulness programs in incarcerated settings across the world. PYP is a global nonprofit organization that has developed a holistic approach to rehabilitation and transformation within the criminal justice system. Founded by James Fox at San Quentin Prison, he and fellow facilitators have been teaching trauma-informed yoga and mindfulness classes to people impacted by incarceration since 2002. PYP's programs, including RAY, are grounded in evidence-based trauma-informed yoga and embodied mindfulness practices, equipping individuals with the essential tools for self-regulation, self-discovery, and personal growth.
