We know skin health and it goes much deeper than the surface. For instance, we know that our skin is a reflection of our hormones within. This is why hormonal changes can lead to outbreaks or clearer skin. In both sexes, skin sensitivity to testosterone can cause excess sebum production and result acne. High oestrogen levels or imbalances can increase hyperpigmentation by amplifying the effects of UV on melanogenesis. Estrogen deficiency result in lower collagen production and poor wound healing, thus contributing to skin ageing and laxity. Cortisol, a stress hormone, breaks down dermal proteins and weakens small blood vessels, weakening the skin. Our skin health is intimately tied to our immune system. For example, dysregulation of the skin barrier, coupled with dysfunctional immune responses to pathogens or allergens, results in conditions such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. One notable signalling molecule, histamine, released by our immune system in response to these triggers, exacerbates atopic dermatitis and psoriasis whilst causing itching and disturbs sleep. We also know that our skin is not alone but home to many commensals. Whist some of these commensals exert a protective effect and keep pathogens in check, others can turn virulent and attack the skin. Atopic dermatitis patients have a higher abundance of Staphylococcus spp. that have a higher potential to become virulent than non-atopic dermatitis individuals.
