About Ron Galella
Ron Galella,Ltd. is a renowned celebrity photo archive serving clients in editorial publishing, multimedia, and fine art industries worldwide. Founded in 1980 by the world's most famous paparazzo Ron Galella and his wife, editor and fellow photojournalist Betty Burke Galella, the company was formally incorporated in 1992 with Betty serving as vice president, playing a key role in building and managing the agency. We are built around Ron’s signature style—“Photography with the Paparazzi Approach”—a term he coined and copyrighted to describe his candid, spontaneous method of photographing celebrities. Rejecting posed, studio imagery, Ron aimed to capture subjects “off guard and unrehearsed,” believing those moments revealed more truth than traditional portraiture. We manage what is widely considered the largest celebrity image archive from a single photographer. With millions of photographs meticulously organized by subject, date, and shoot, the archive is actively licensed for editorial and research use through a partnership with major distributor Getty Images. In addition to licensing, we are known for Ron’s hands-on approach. He developed his own film and created custom prints, which are sold in galleries around the world and collected by major institutions. Galella’s work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate Modern, and the Whitney, among others. The company expanded in the 1980s by adding and training new photographers, including Jim Smeal, Carmen Valdes, Kelly Jordan, and Ron’s nephews, Peter and Anthony Savignano. This broadened the agency’s coverage and influence in celebrity media. Despite controversy—including lawsuits from Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and a notorious altercation with Marlon Brando—Ron turned public scrutiny into recognition. Andy Warhol famously called him his “favorite photographer.” After Ron’s passing in 2022 at age 91, we continue to preserve and promote his unmatched legacy.
