About Rooiberg Breede River Conservancy

The Rooiberg Breede River Conservancy is a Non-Profit Organisation working to conserve the natural world of the majestic Langeberg and Rooiberg Mountains, between the towns of Worcester and Robertson in the Western Cape of South Africa. Here landowners work together for nature, to protect natural and agricultural land over more than 51,000 hectares. We have grown and evolved since we were established in 2006 and our Non-Profit Organisation was set-up in 2013, and today we are proud to have 32 landowner members. Why is this region so important for nature? It’s home to threatened fynbos, Succulent Karoo and renosterveld. In fact, four of our 14 natural vegetation types are facing extinction. Many of our plant species occur only here and nowhere else on Earth. These natural landscapes also provide corridors for wildlife between agricultural lands - from the iconic Cape leopard to the mysterious brown hyena. Our freshwater species are just as important, with the conservancy home to restricted populations of the Endangered Breede Redfin. It’s no surprise therefore that we form part of a Critical Biodiversity Area, as well as a climate corridor. The conservancy employs a team that works to find and implement solutions that support both nature and people. As such, we run projects that include rehabilitating landscapes, removing invasive alien plants, monitoring biodiversity, erosion control and fire protection. We also focus on environmental education and awareness and support our landowners to become biodiversity stewardship sites. Given our pristine setting, many of our members now showcase this vast open and ancient landscape through tourist offerings - from accommodation to activities.
