About Rossa Cycles

Back in 2014 I was working on the small island of Gili Trawangan in Indonesia. This tiny island measuring just 3km wide had no motorised vehicles. The only method of transportation were cidomo (a small horse-drawn carriage) or classic beach cruiser bicycles. Naturally I was interested in the latter, it may have been a rusty rental that showed its age but the riding position, comfort and style were like nothing I had experienced from a bike prior. I had never enjoyed riding a bike so much. When I returned to my native Dublin years later I did what most cycling Dubliners do, I bought an expensive commuter bike with 21 gears, disc brakes and suspension. It looked fancy but felt wrong, I was riding flat roads at cruising speeds but I felt uncomfortable. The bike’s riding position bent me over like a shrimp putting unnecessary strain on my back. I yearned for that Indonesian beach cruiser. I searched high and low across Ireland for a beach cruiser to no avail, the same applied to the rest of Europe. I eventually imported one from America and I was fulfilled to once again enjoy the comfort and joy that only a beach cruiser brings. The beach cruiser was designed for sandy flat paths, not the city streets of Dublin though. It clanked and banged as it moved, the wheels began to stiffen and the pedals even fell off! I wanted to keep the bike’s humble simplicity but I knew it had to be changed to fit its new home. I began working on it, adding higher spec components and new parts. This little personal project was bigger than I imagined. A passion grew in me and I decided to start Rossa Cycles so that I could share that feeling of small island bliss with the people of Dublin. Weather not included! After 4 years of hard work with a lot of help from my friends and other cycling nuts I finally completed a finished design of a single speed and 3 speed beach cruiser that was city compatible.
