About Russo Italian Restaurant + Market
Our family’s roots trace back to Sicily as farmers, fishermen, and merchants, with a history in food and wine dating to the 1700s. In 1902, we established a small kiosk near Grand Rapids’ famed furniture factories, providing home-style meals for Italian artisans. By 1905, Giovanni Battista Russo and his parents, Francesco and Girolama, expanded to Wealthy Street, later acquiring a building at Division and Franklin in 1908. Family businesses flourished on the ground floor, with apartments above. At 752 S. Division, GB Russo Importer evolved into GB Russo & Son when Frank D. Russo was born in 1916. Giovanni and his daughter, Rose, also operated Roma Hall, a renowned venue that hosted legendary performers like Nat King Cole and The Supremes from the 1930s-70s. In the 1950s, GB and Frank opened the area’s first fast-food pizzeria at 750 Division, which later moved to 44th St. SW under cousin Michael Russo’s ownership. Frank married Mary Amante in 1947, and together they raised five children, including John F. Russo, who helped run the specialty food and wine store, moving locations over the decades before opening Carrettino Italian Market in the early 2000s. Now, John and his children—Gina, Mike, Greg, and Dominic—continue the family legacy with Russo Ristorante & Mercato at Tanger Outlets. This new format reflects the original S. Division location, blending authentic Italian cuisine, small plates, and fine wines in a casual setting. Our mercato offers premium Italian and Mediterranean groceries, sourced from family-owned, sustainable producers, alongside a curated selection of top American and European wines. Quality products and personal service remain our tradition!
