About Rutgers School of Arts and Sciences
The School of Arts and Sciences is the liberal arts school of Rutgers University–New Brunswick, offering more than 100 majors and minors across life sciences, mathematical and physical sciences, humanities, and social and behavioral sciences. The School of Arts and Sciences, the largest and most comprehensive academic unit at Rutgers, is committed to preparing students for life in a rapidly changing world. With roots that date back to the beginning of higher education in America, the School reflects a tradition of liberal arts learning that began in 1766 with the founding of Queen’s College, the institution that would become Rutgers University. Four outstanding undergraduate institutions carried that tradition into the 21st century: Rutgers, Douglass, Livingston, and University colleges. Established in 2007 with the union of the four colleges, the School of Arts and Sciences brings together the talent, traditions, energy, and resources of all four and enlists them all in the mission to create the best school for arts and sciences in the nation. Now, the Rutgers School of Arts and Sciences is a globally engaged teaching and research institution, with 750 full-time faculty and a vibrant and diverse student body of over 20,000 students. The Rutgers School of Arts and Sciences offers an education of unparalleled breadth and depth biological, mathematical, and physical sciences, humanities, and social and behavioral sciences, combining excellence in teaching with boundary-breaking research. With over 200,000 living alumni who attended the School of Arts and Sciences or the legacy colleges, the liberal arts tradition at Rutgers University--a tradition that goes back to the beginning of classical higher education in America, and one that is thoroughly engaged in our complex world today--is well represented in all 50 states and across the globe.
