Together, we can save many patients lives! The Safe Healthcare (Refua Betuha) association is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 2017 by Rachel and Amnon Leikovich in recognition of the supreme importance of uncompromising struggle to prevent hospitals acquired infections and the importance of community involvement in it. As reported by Israel State Controller (2013), "the number of deaths related to the pollution acquired in hospitals from antibiotic-resistant or sensitive bacteria in Israel is estimated at 4,000 to 6,000 patients a year. Per the same calculation, one-quarter to three-quarters of the acquired infections in hospitals can be prevented, that is, between 1,000 and 4,500 deaths. In most hospitals, there is no data on direct mortality from acquired infections. The association's goal is to bring about a real change in the public awareness of the prevention of acquired infections in hospitals. The association works to raise public awareness of the issue and fights to save the lives of patients infected with hospital infections, as well as to safeguard and realize the rights of patients and their families. The Safe Healthcare association assists in providing information to the public about what is permitted and what is forbidden during visits to patients at the hospital, since the large number of visitors and the lack of awareness of the public contribute to the transmission of infections. In addition, the association works to lead changes and public struggles in the prevention of acquired infections in hospitals and the rights of the patient, the health system and decision makers.
