About Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum
Join us June 14 as we celebrate the STARS and STRIPES of our great nation. Flag Day is believed to have began in 1885 when a school teacher in Wisconsin arranged to have a 'Flag Birthday with his students. Over the next 30 years, celebrations like this became more popular and citizens began to request their politicians to adopt resolutions to honor the flag on June 14. On May 30, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation to officially establish Flag Day. Finally, on August 3, 1949, President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14 as Flag Day. Here, at Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum, we will be hosting the Bay City Eagles B.P.O. #88 at 6 PM as they hold a flag day ceremony aboard the USS Edson. You can find more information HERE. Throughout the day, we will also be asking guests to sign card that we will be sending to 3 different groups of Sailors who are deployed and do not receive mail from home. Admission through the day will be $10 for adults, $8 for kids 6-16, kids 5 and under will be free. The ship will close at 5 PM and no tours will be available during or after the Flag Day Ceremony.
