About Salem Keizer Coalition for Equality
Our mission: We partner and advocate with Latina/o/x families, schools and communities to ensure equitable educational outcomes. We believe in: Parents as partners with their children’s schools Parents as advocates for their children’s education Parents as stakeholders in education systems Our strategies: We engage with Latino Spanish speaking parents and families using Popular Education Methodologies to equip them to access education and leadership opportunities on behalf of their children and families. We partner with Latino families, the Salem Keizer School District, the Oregon Department of Education and local community members to improve Latino student outcomes. We advocate with law and policy makers and administrators to ensure equitable policies and practices, and equitable representation in institutional decision-making for Latino students and their families. Our Programs: Parent Organizing Project: 1. Educa e Inspira (Educate and Inspire): Supporting parents in their key role of engaging in their child’s educational success. 2. Formando Familias Fuertes: Crucial Conversations, Strengthening Families, support groups & mentoring. 3. Civic Engagement and Leadership: Opportunities for Latino staff and parents to grow as leaders and be involved in advocacy and decision making opportunities at the city, district, school board, and state level. 4. Systems Change: Working with the school district to change historical inequities in policies, procedures and practices on issues of diversity, culturally responsive practices, language access, and more. Early Learning: 1. Leyendo Avanzamos (Reading Together We Advance): parent-led reading intervention for grades K-3. 2. Parenting: Culturally appropriate curriculum such as Abriendo Puertas, Haga de la Paternidad un Placer, Años Increible & Soluciones Positivas. 3. Aprendiendo Avanzamos: Parent-led preschool & Ready! for Kindergarten 4. Summer family programs.
