About Salzburg Institute for Arts in Medicine (SIAM)
The Salzburg Institute for Arts in Medicine (SIAM) was founded in 2022 by Katarzyna Grebosz-Haring and Leonhard Thun-Hohenstein as a subsidiary of the Association of Friends of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Salzburg. Its aim is to promote artistic practices in support of the treatment of young people with mental health issues. The SIAM is dedicated to promoting artistic activities and their value for the benefit of people of all ages, with and without mental and physical health conditions—particularly children and adolescents facing psychological challenges and older adults living with neurodegenerative diseases. In medicine, the arts are already used in various ways—for example, to reduce stress and promote relaxation, to enhance different skills, or even to directly improve symptoms. At SIAM, artists, researchers, and physicians work together with patients in an inclusive and participatory approach. They bring a wealth of practical, scientific, and clinical experience and knowledge to the table. Together, they have the potential to transform therapeutic practices by foregrounding the cultural and artistic needs of individuals on their path to healing and rehabilitation. In addition, SIAM is committed to advancing current knowledge through excellent research and rigorous critical evaluation. We firmly believe that artistic interventions can make a significant contribution to health promotion, disease prevention, and the development of resilience. Currently, our offerings consist of workshops designed in collaboration with our artists. If you are interested in an artistic intervention for your clientele, you can find all current offerings under the "Our Artists" section of our website.
