About San Diego Refugee Tutoring

Our mission: San Diego Refugee Tutoring (SDRT) provides holistic academic support through one-on-one tutoring, enrichment activities, and mentorship to students of refugee background in the community of City Heights in Central San Diego. SDRT supports students from refugee backgrounds from preschool through high school. Our volunteer tutors work on-on-one with students, focusing on core English and math skills through direct instruction, reading sessions, and educational games. We encourage returning tutors to work with the same students to build strong relationships and ensure consistent progress. Our students' time in the United States ranges from one month to over ten years. Most students are multilingual, speaking several languages in addition to English. They come from diverse backgrounds including: Burma, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Sudan, Haiti, Central African Republic, Syria, and Afghanistan.
