The San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus leads by creating extraordinary music and experiences that build community, inspire activism, and foster compassion at home and around the world. Founded in 1978, the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus and is the world's first chorus to have the word "gay" in its name. The Chorus' first public appearance was on the steps of San Francisco City Hall at the candlelight vigil on the night of the assassination of Supervisor Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone. In 1981, SFGMC embarked on a nationwide tour that inspired the creation of a global LGBT choral movement that, today, numbers over 250 choruses around the planet. Since these early years, more than 1,500 SFGMC members have volunteered proudly and served as goodwill ambassadors, promoting awareness and understanding of the LGBTQ community through music and the shared experience of performance. Our audience and community supporters are with us every step of the way. A community organization rooted in San Francisco and the Bay Area, SFGMC performs over 50 concerts each year for a diverse array of audiences, including many appearances that directly benefit local social justice and healthcare-related non-profit organizations. More than simply a performance group, community involvement is an active part of our mission. Today, SFGMC numbers around 300 singing members. SFGMC annually serves an audience of approximately 45,000 and is led by a volunteer board of directors, Artistic Director - Jacob Stensberg, and CEO - Christopher Verdugo. The organization is supported by a team of volunteers and a small paid staff. SFGMC is grateful to receive the support of many corporate partners and foundations.
