About San Francisco State University, Estuary & Ocean Science Center
San Francisco State University's Estuary & Ocean Science (EOS) Center is an interdisciplinary center for research and education. The EOS Center is located on San Francisco State's Romberg Tiburon Campus in Marin County, California. The EOS Center is the only university marine laboratory on San Francisco Bay. The mission of the Estuary & Ocean Science Center is to connect science, society and the sea through outstanding interdisciplinary research, education and outreach programs. Our vision is to create a sustainable center for scientific discovery, innovation and education to ensure healthy and resilient coastal ecosystems for future generations. We use science to make sense of the world around us, convene effective scientific and educational partnerships. We work with communities, governments, schools, businesses, scientific agencies, non-profits and universities to help people and nature thrive together in a healthy environment. In 2003 together with the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration and others to establish and support the San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve to help protect over 3,700 acres tidal marshes in SF Bay. We partner with the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and Marine Global Earth Observatory on collaborative research in San Francisco Bay and beyond. In 2017 with support from National Science Foundation we established an innovative new master degree program in Interdisciplinary Marine and Estuarine Sciences. We share outstanding, important and timely science with our local community through the Barbara and Richard Rosenberg Institute for Marine Biology and Environmental Science. In 1978 SF State acquired the property for the Romberg Tiburon Campus and established a center for environmental studies focused on SF Bay. Together they were called the Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies. In 2018 we launched the EOS Center and updated the campus name.
