After studying artificial intelligence, Sander Martens (1973) worked as a cognitive neuroscientist for 27 years. In 2014, he started working as a professional photographer alongside his scientific work. Ten years later, he decided to work full-time as a photographer and visual artist. His interest in art, experimentation and innovation is strongly reflected in his graphic images, in which control, change and chaos are recurring themes. ORDER AND CHAOS AS A FUNCTION OF TIME The work of photographer and visual artist Sander Martens is about finding balance. Balance between order and chaos, holding on and letting go, growth and decay. We spend an increasingly larger portion of our time in digital worlds, where any form of nuance is sometimes hard to find. Something is either a '1' or a '0', thumbs up or thumbs down. But in reality, it can sometimes be both a '1' and a '0' (as in a quantum computer). Martens therefore deliberately keeps room for multiple interpretations in his work. Because life is not just black and white. Provided you take the time, there are many shades of grey to discover. Martens constantly navigates between two extremes: between commerce and art, science and photography, control and spontaneity. In his creative quest, sometimes by using cyanotypes (an analogue technique dating from 1842) or physical manipulations, he gives chance, luck, and time an active role in his photography, to arrive at layered, graphic images that exude both vulnerability and resilience. Whether portraits, landscapes, or still lifes, it is the fleeting moments of stillness, with the promise that something is about to happen, that he wants to capture and preserve. As if everything is still possible as long as that tossed coin stays in the air.
