About Sandy Liang
Sandy Liang is a designer who draws inspiration from the layers of her childhood in 1990s New York City. These range from personal to universal, from nostalgic memories of Polly Pockets and Miyazaki to glimpses of cooks in aprons smoking behind restaurants, the patterned fabrics worn by grandmas shopping on Canal Street, and Renaissance paintings at the Met. As a designer, Liang’s roots are in outerwear with an emphasis on structure and texture, but with a playfulness that recalls the comfort of winter coats on the schoolyard. Since her first collection in 2014 focusing on outerwear and aprons, each season has layered upon on the last. Her line has expanded to include skorts, fleeces, knitwear, dresses, and jewelry — all made with an acute attention to detail and the best materials. In 2022, Sandy released her first shoe to the world: the Mary Jane Pointe. It combines the classic Chinatown Mary Jane silhouette with the pointe toe of ballet slippers: a modern take on two New York favorites. With each piece she creates, Sandy Liang redefines the uniform for the downtown princess.
