About Sarasota United for Responsibility and Equity (SURE)

Founded nearly 25 years ago, Sarasota United for Responsibility and Equity (SURE) has stayed committed to the vision and mission of joining together as an interfaith community in order to fight for justice throughout our county. We stand against injustice in all forms because of our belief that we have been called by our respective faiths to care for all people in our community. We have a vision to build and deepen relationships throughout all sectors and segments of our diverse community by joining together as one body. Our work is pushed forward by the goal of enabling faith organizations to act on our shared values of human worth, dignity, and justice. In order to do this kind of work in an effective and respectful manner, we use the biblical model that is laid out in Nehemiah 5. Members of SURE's religious organizations meet with public officials to present them with a reasonable, well-researched proposal and invite them to our annual Nehemiah Action in the Spring. Here, they are joined by hundreds of people from the county to participate in a face-to-face meeting where we ask for specific commitments to justice work. This process has been incredibly successful for us throughout the years. Some successes include: ★ the creation of the Addiction Recovery Pod in the Sarasota County Jail which has reduced recidivism by over 60% and has helped more than 1,500 people ★ the Comprehensive Treatment Court was established specifically to help people who are unhoused and mentally ill receive six months of housing and wrap around services ★ Civil Citations has been a tremendous success - we have seen the rates of youth arrests for first-time, non-serious misdemeanors drop by 70%! Due to the wild success of the youth civil citation program, SURE was also able to get civil citations enacted for adults.
