About Sasa Sisal
Sasa Sisal is on a mission to transform East Africa’s abundant sisal waste in to sustainable solutions, including protien and fuel. Each year, ~500k tonnes of sisal waste is left to decompose. This waste results in nearly 1m tonnes carbon emissions per year. At the same time, 3 million people in Kenya and Tanzania face a food crisis. In Kenya, 70% of soybeans and 30% of maize is used for animal feed, intensifying the “food vs. feed” debate. Over the last 3 years, the price of animal feed in Kenya rose ~ 80%, increasing pressures on the food system. The fish sector for example, faces an annual supply deficit of ~ 365k tonnes. Sasa Sisal aims to address both the environmental impact of sisal waste in and the region’s growing food supply challenges by transforming agricultural waste into Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) – an affordable, sustainable, high protein animal and fish feed.
