About SASRE • The South African Society for Railway Engineering
SASRE (pronounced ‘sass-ray’) is the South African Society for Railway Engineering. SASRE is an ECSA-recognised voluntary association founded in 1932 with the aim to promote the exchange of knowledge between, broaden the experience and increase the effectiveness of its members, with particular emphasis on railway engineering subjects and associated technologies. Our membership includes - but is not limited to - engineers, technicians, technologists and artisans working in civil, electrical, electronic and mechanical engineering, as well as those working in transport and logistics and at companies that supply and support the rail industry. Benefits of SASRE membership include: 🔹 1 × ECSA CPD point¹ per year for SASRE members in good standing² (Category 3: Individual Activities) 🔹 Discounted ECSA annual fees (10% for candidates and 13% for professionals) 🔹 Networking and business opportunities 🔹 Email notifications and calendar reminders for society events 🔹 Elegibility to join SASRE site visits 🔹 Access to recordings and slides for past meeting presentations ¹ SASRE is a recognised ECSA Category A Voluntary Association (VA A 0035) ² SASRE's individual membership fee is only R 100.00 per year SASRE hosts monthy general meetings that are open to all members, to attend in person in Pretoria or virtually. A member or guest presents on their project, technology or concept and fields questions from members. After the presentation members mingle, network and catch up with colleagues. We organise industry visits for our members; our latest visit was to the BMW production plant in Rosslyn, Pretoria. Potential future visits include a working site visit with Plasser Rail, and plant visits at Columbus Steels or Ford South Africa. Please visit our website to view more information and SASRE news, and to apply for membership.
