About Save the Mothers
Save the Mothers is an international organization that equips professionals in developing countries - who work in a wide array of disciplines - to improve the health of mothers and babies. Through their specific vocations, graduates of our Master in Public Health Leadership (MPHL) program become influencers for positive societal change, working to overcome preventable maternal death. Founded by Canadian obstetrician/gynecologist Dr. Jean Chamberlain Froese, Save the Mothers (STM) launched its first MPHL program at Uganda Christian University (UCU), near Uganda’s capital, Kampala in 2005. STM immediately became one of UCU’s most valued programs, receiving accolades from officials like Janet Museveni, Uganda’s First Lady. Since then, STM has enrolled several Ugandan Members of Parliament, high-ranking national journalists and other top professionals. In 2008 STM completed Mirembe Hall, the training and residential centre that houses the program. Most recently, Save the Mothers launched its “Mother Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative,” a program linking STM graduates to existing health facilities, ensuring higher standards of care and accountability for women and children. To date, some 450 East African leaders have come through the program. Dr. Miriam Mutabazi was appointed to the position of East African Director in 2017. Dr. Eve Nakabembe, a Ugandan obstetrician/gynecologist, serves as Director of the Mother Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative, and Teopista Agutu is the Networking Coordinator, making Save the Mothers a known name in East Africa and beyond.
