About Schlesinger Associates Architects

Frank Schlesinger, the founder and principlal of Frank Schlesinger Associates Architects, has been producing award-winning architecture in the DC area for over 30 years. After his undergraduate studies at Middlebury College and the University of Illinois, he received a Master of Architecture degree from Harvard University's Graduate School of Design. He then worked in the offices of Hugh Stubbins, Marcel Breuer and Louis Kahn before starting his own practice. Over the years, Frank Schlesinger has always believed it important to combine practice with teaching. To this end, throughout his career, in addition to practicing, he has been on the architectural faculties of The University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University and The University of Maryland, where he is presently Professor Emeritus. In addition to having been inducted as a Fellow in the American Institute of Architects as one of it's youngest recipients, other prestigious honors have included the Arthur Wheelwright Fellow in Architecture from Harvard University, the Kea Distinguished Professorship from the University of Maryland, the National Endowment for the Arts Distinguished Designer Fellowship and, most recently, the DC/AIA Chapters Centennial Award, "the highest honor the Chapter can bestow upon a member". The firm has always been unique in that, despite its relatively small size, it has done a wide range of work in terms of both size and building type. Controlling the size of the firm has meant that we have always have had a "hands on" relationship with the work that comes through the office. The quality resulting from this approach to architectural practice is attested to by the large number of design awards the firm has received from the AIA, its recognition in professional publications, such as Architectural Record and Progressive Architecture, and, most importantly, by the number of clients who, having shared the adventure, became personal friends.
