About Schoolreaders
We want every child to read well. Our network of dedicated volunteers provide free weekly one-to-one reading support for children in primary schools nationwide. With 1 in 4 children leaving primary school unable to read well, there has never been a more important time for our work. In the 2021/22 academic year, with our 2,000 volunteers we aim to provide 20,000 children with a face-to-face reading session every week. Currently, we are prioritising schools in areas of the greatest need where pupils have been impacted hardest by Covid-19 lockdowns. Leaving primary school with poor reading skills can have a detrimental effect on a child’s secondary education and life chances. Literacy opens doors, helps learning and brings new opportunities.
