About Schrafft's Specialty Foods and Restaurants

Schrafft's was one of the most magical places on Earth. Its 55 locations in New York, Palm Beach, Philadelphia, Syracuse, Richmond, White Plains, New Rochelle and Boston were bastions of great food and drink. It was known for many things: bespoke cocktails, artisinal cooking, knife-cut ice creams, arabica coffees, and hand-crafted chocolates. It also may have been the first ice cream barlor. Schrafft's has so many touchstones of the American experience that books have been published about it, poems have been written about it and songs have been sung about it. The famous have entered its doors and unknowns have walked out famous (ask Kirk Douglas). That iconic photo of Audrey Hepburn from "Breakfast at Tiffany's"? Well, that's our coffee in her hand and that's our Danish in her bag. Founded in the 1860s as a candy company in Boston, Frank G. Shattuck, a salesman for them, bought the enterprise in 1898 and took it to heights never before seen in America. Famous for its Gold Chest (R) candy, coffee ice cream, magnificent apple pie, dreamy chicken a la king, creameried cauliflower, succulent corned beef hash, braised beef burgundy, celery egg salad on homemade cheese bread and the ultimate Reuben sandwich made for dipping in Thousand Islands dressing, Schrafft's led the way in forming America's palate. And now we're finally back. James Byrne, the Godson of the founding family, won't settle for less.
