As our planet faces its biggest challenge of our lifetime with the climate crisis, the landscaping industry is still embedded in the linear Take-Make-Use-Waste economy model. Gardens still contain sandstone quarried and shipped from India, bricks and porcelain baked at 1200°C and concrete, the material responsible for 7-9% of all global CO2 emissions. From the cross pollination of founder, and RHS Gold Medal Winning Garden Designer, Sara Edwards' computer aided design (CAD) / computer aided manufacture (CAM) and off-site manufacturing experience; eco deep tech start-up SCULPTS (Sustainable Concrete Unique Landscaping 3D Printed Technology Solutions) intends to address this crisis with its innovative landscaping solution, using low carbon or carbon neutral 3D printed concrete to produce low carbon hard landscaping solutions, which she has been developing as part of the first cohort of businesses on the NMITE Innovation Business Support Programme, with InnovateUK. We are proud to be collaborating with Nomad and their groundbreaking work on developing 3D printed low carbon with 75% reduction in CO2 emissions, using circular economy locally sourced ‘Urban mining’ recycled materials, from within a fifty mile raidus, as well as carbon neutral geo-polymer concrete. On 12th October 2024 No.30 Design Studio was honored to be a finalist in the Innovator of the Year category, at the Herefordshire Business Awards and won for our work on what is now known as SCULPTS!
