When many Western travellers first visit Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, places like Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, or Cambodia, it’s often framed as "cheap travel" or chase the travel trend of experiencing relaxation in a tropical destination. Affordable accommodations, budget food, lower daily costs — it’s easy to focus on the price tag. But Southeast Asia is not cheap. The Pacific Islands are more than just a place to rediscover yourself. It’s rich. Rich in culture, tradition, history, resilience, and hospitality. For generations, these countries have offered experiences that money can't buy — ancient temples, vibrant communities, spiritual traditions, and breathtaking landscapes. As travellers — and as global citizens — it’s time we recognise that affordability doesn't mean inferiority. Our 2-week vacation is only a surface-level glamorised glimpse into the lives of locals. Travelling mindfully means honouring the cultures of the places we visit, learning their histories and customs, and respecting the people who welcome us.
