About Seattle Universal Math Museum
Seattle Universal Math Museum (SUMM) is not just a place—it’s a movement, a community, and a space where math learning and exploration thrive. It’s a place where we show that math is for everyone, no matter their age, background, or prior experience. We are united under the shared belief that math is the universal language of problem-solving. As a city deeply rooted in STEM, Seattle is a national leader in the application of math across multiple fields. SUMM is committed to expanding access and opportunity to math education. We are dedicated to sparking curiosity through engaging hands-on experiences for all learners to value the beauty and strength of math. The Seattle Universal Math Museum hosts events and interactive programming in partnership with libraries, schools, community centers, farmers markets, and other museums across the Puget Sound region. We offer fun, educational programming that increases math literacy and connects math to children’s everyday lives in a way that feels like play. We prioritize serving students who face the greatest barriers to math success including girls, low-income students, neurodiverse learners, and communities of color – basically anyone who has been historically marginalized from high expectations and quality math education. Between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024, SUMM hosted 268 events serving nearly 12,000 students, educators, and families. Of those events 75% were in communities of opportunity with 72% being funded through grants and donations. Our long-term dream is to open a flagship museum, filled with interactive exhibits. It will be a place for families to play together or school groups to have math adventures. Serving the community is at the heart of what we do. So if you ask where is SUMM located, I answer EVERYWHERE in our community. Because that is where you will find us and that is where you find mathematics, everywhere.
