About Secretary of War Communications

Secretary of Defense Communications delivers world-class communications and information services that together enable the Secretary of Defense and his Immediate Office to orchestrate our nation’s defense, regardless of location, scenario, or environment. Secretary of Defense Communications is responsible for enabling command and control capabilities for the Secretary of Defense and Deputy Secretary of Defense, by providing an integrated communications solution that delivers global situational awareness across all threat scenarios and geographic locations, enabling the Secretary of Defense to exercise authorities and responsibilities mandated in Titles 10 and 50. Secretary of Defense Communications’ Cables Branch, staffed by active duty military personnel, serves as the operational information management and command and control support center, providing the Secretary of Defense with strategic information and situational awareness. Technology has evolved since Cables was established in the 1960’s, but the robust capabilities required to meet situational demands remains the same. Cables delivers continuous situational awareness for the Secretary of Defense in coordination with the White House Situation Room, State Department Operations Center, Combatant Commands, foreign ministries of defense, and cabinet level officials. Cables is organized as a Joint Element with about 20 service members working around the clock in three-member teams. A Secretary of Defense Communications assignment allows one to personally engage Senior Department of Defense Officials on a daily basis. Members stay on the cutting edge, continuously coordinating with organizations such as the Joint Staff, the Intelligence Community, and the White House Communications Agency to ensure synchronization across the Department.
