During a millisecond-long plasma discharge (= spark), the sample solution gets flash-heated to a high 10,000°C temperature: molecular species in the water get dissociated into atoms, followed by excitation of the atoms to their higher electronic states. Atoms release their excess energy by emitting optical light upon returning to their ground state. Analysis of the atomic emission spectrum enables qualitative and quantitative analysis of metals."
