Moreover, having witnessed the transition from the Joseon Dynasty (when Seoul was called “Hanyang”) to the colonial era (when it was “Gyeongseong”) to the Republic of Korea, Seoul has served as the capital city of Korea for over 600 years. Its strong geographic presence and time-honored traditions—which are the city’s most important assets—demonstrate Seoul’s truly unique features and status. A museum dedicated to Seoul located at the heart of the city, the Seoul Museum of History is overflowing with longstanding historic facts and memories. The Seoul Museum of History is an organization dedicated to protecting and exhibiting the relics, urban remains, and historical houses of Seoul. The museum consists of the main building and numerous annexes including the Seoul City Wall Museum, Cheonggyecheon Museum, Dongdaemun History Museum and Dongdaemun Stadium Memorial Museum, Gyeonggyojang, Baek In-je House, Gyeonghuigung Palace, Gongpyeong Historic Sites Museum, and Donuimun Museum Each of these institutions retains its own significance and value in relation to the various aspects of Seoul’s history, including its four mountains, city wall, streams, urban life, urban organizations, relics, and historic houses and sites. The Seoul Museum of History’s main hall and numerous annexes form a kind of urban constellation that takes visitors on a journey through the long-established, time-honored history of Seoul.
