About Sewickley Valley Historical Society
In 1973, eleven residents of the Sewickley Valley area met for the first meeting of the Sewickley Valley Historical Society [SVHS]. They came together over their shared interest in preserving the history of the Valley (the nine boroughs and two townships that make up the Quaker Valley School District) through its documents, photographs, stories, and built environment. Today, with the support of a membership of nearly 500 members, SVHS furthers the legacy and mission of its founding members. With an active 14-member board of directors, an executive director, and volunteer committees, SVHS distributes a monthly newsletter, produces a monthly lecture series, gives out a robust slate of preservation awards (established starting in 1987) and grants (since 2018), and assists researchers from the area and abroad. With its public program offerings and collection of thousands of documents, images, and objects, SVHS fulfills the goals set out by the founding members and its mission – to promote interest in and to record, collect, preserve, and document the history of the Sewickley Valley.
