About us Shearwater was built around the philosophy:"I have diabetes; diabetes doesn't have me!" We seek to spread this approach to diabetes throughout the ever growing "family" of people living with diabetes. The Foundation was formed to empower those living with diabetes through positive examples and self-confidence building activities. Our goal is to help these individuals realize diabetes is only a consideration on the way to fulfilling their dreams and not a roadblock. Following the team's successful completion of the Southbound effort, we will begin our next step of utilizing various camp facilities in the area along with the mountains of Western North Carolina where Shearwater is based. We will coordinate our efforts with endocrinologists (physicians specializing in endocrine disorders such as diabetes), family members, support groups, and those living with diabetes themselves to provide acitivities and positive role models for anyone living with diabetes regardless of age or type of diabetes. Our activities will always be led by qualified outdoor guides, medical staff, and active individuals living with diabetes. This positive reinforcement also promotes sounds management practices associated with diabetes such as diet and exercise. The interaction and camaraderie among our participants is the most rewarding aspect of our activities and organization. Life enriching experiences for those living with diabetes is what we're all about!
