About Sheffield Mencap & Gateway

Sheffield Mencap and Gateway is an independent local charity formed in 1951 by the parents of children with learning disabilities. We have over 700 members, from our special needs baby group through to lunch clubs for elderly carers. We pride ourselves on the providing the life-long support needed by the learning disability community. ~ Our Vision ~ We want all people with a learning disability and their carers in Sheffield to be valued, included and respected so they can live fair, full and happy lives. ~ Our Values ~ We strengthen communities We develop positive relationships We foster independence We build confidence We improve wellbeing ~ Our Services ~ The ‘Activity Learning Hub’ is our core service, supporting over 60 individuals every weekday through groups including Gardening, Drama and Videography. Our Health Services collaborate with clinical and care professionals to reduce health inequalities, as well as supporting sustainable lifestyle change. We aim to reduce isolation through our 20+ evening and weekend groups for adults and children. Groups include sports, choir and social clubs. Our carers support includes social groups, wellbeing activities, workshops and 1-2-1 emotional or practical support.
