About shiftED
shiftED is an educational charity empowering children and young people through project-based design and making. We focus on bridging the gap between school and the real world, with an emphasis on equal access for all. We believe all children and young people should have regular access to high-quality art and design education, with opportunities to develop their skills beyond school. Unfortunately, recent reports from Ofsted and organisations like The Sutton Trust, DATA, and NSEAD highlight a decline in young people studying and accessing art and design, alongside challenges in teacher recruitment. Cuts to council budgets have also led to a reduction in affordable out-of-school arts provision, making opportunities increasingly scarce. At shiftED, we are committed to addressing these gaps and ensuring all young people can access the creative learning they deserve. Our project-based programmes integrate learning across subjects, empowering learners through meaningful project briefs aligned with the creative sectors. We believe in shifting education towards interdisciplinary, hands-on learning that has real purpose. Too often, theory and practice feel disconnected in schools, yet the real world relies on the application of knowledge to solve problems. We offer programmes for full-sized classes from state primary schools (Y4-6), particularly those serving economically disadvantaged communities, at our Makerspace in Camden. Additionally, we offer after-school programmes for children and young people aged 10-18, giving them the chance to further explore their passions and develop potential pathways into the creative sector.
