About Sibanye-Stillwater’s Keliber lithium project
Sibanye-Stillwater’s Keliber lithium project, located in Central Ostrobothnia in Finland, is expected to be the first in Europe to produce battery-grade lithium hydroxide utilising its own ore. Keliber is a subsidiary of Sibanye-Stillwater, a multinational mining and metals processing Group, with Finnish Minerals Group, a state-owned company developing the value chain of lithium-ion batteries, the second largest shareholder. Lithium hydroxide is an essential component in lithium-ion batteries, which enable the electrification of transportation, the storage of renewable energy and speed up digitalisation. The ore will be processed at the Keliber concentrator, which is under construction near the main mining areas in Kaustinen. The concentrate will be refined into lithium hydroxide at the Keliber lithium refinery, which is under construction in Kokkola Industrial Park. When the Keliber lithium project moves into operational phase, we plan to utilise the best available technologies, minimise the environmental impact of our operations and ensure the conditions necessary for the circular economy. The construction phase is estimated to employ up to 800 people, and steady state employment is estimated at around 350 people, including almost 100 working through mining contractors.
