About Sickle Cell Care Manchester
Sickle Cell Care Manchester is a charitable incorporated organisation (CIO) with the charitable purpose of supporting people living with Sickle Cell Disease. The organisation is BAME led by people who have lived experience of Sickle Cell Disease. Over 14,000 people live with Sickle Cell Disease. We are based in Manchester, England which as 1200 people suffering from the disease. We currently support 150 people in our local area and more via our online services. We are a small charitable organisation with three part time staff and an average of 30-40 volunteers. Our volunteers are our lifeline. They visit people in their homes and in hospital. Sickle Cell Disease causes red blood cells to become 'sickle' shaped instead of the usual round shape. The sickle blood cells can become clogged in a patient's veins and cause a pain crisis that can range from mild to severe enough to require hospitalisation. We offer a range of services including: A weekly support group to explore and share information, best practices and personal experiences of managing the condition. Visiting sufferers in hospital offering practical and emotional support Supporting hospital discharge providing practical and emotional support to enable earlier discharge and reduce readmissions Providing a telephone helpline and signposting to available support Delivering education and awareness-raising seminars, including need for screening, and the importance of BAME blood and organ donations as sufferers more frequently require these, often have rarer blood groups, and there is a national shortage of BAME donors. Empowering and encouraging beneficiaries to have 'a voice' and engage collectively with statutory bodies and other relevant organisations, including the NHS. Delivering workshops to educate sufferers and address specific issues We are building our website into a knowledge resource to reach a wider audience online.
