About Sierra Academy of Expeditionary Learning
Sierra Academy of Expeditionary Learning (SAEL) is a project-based charter high school program located in Nevada City, CA. Through the EL Education approach, students learn to do more than they think possible. Students are challenged to solve real world problems via interdisciplinary academics that culminate in a high quality product that serves an authentic purpose. Using Growth Mindset with a mastery based grading approach that honors the learning process, SAEL is challenging what high school is and should be. The teachers and staff are passionate changemakers who believe in the power of providing students with the opportunity to fail and rise with support and feedback. Students are supported to engage in critical thinking, project applications, and even personalized learning pathways. Fieldwork, adventure, and service learning are at the heart of the school program as students engage with what they are learning by meeting the people who are doing the professional work and going to the actual places associated with what they are studying.
