About SILK

FA is based on a patented technology to exploit the acoustic properties of materials in a new way. By using clothes made out of different fibres mixed together it is possible to control dampening or propagation in specific part of the material (up to a single fibre accuracy) customising its acoustic properties. The world of acoustic materials has not seen innovations in decades. Even though there are advanced materials for sound dampening,there is almost nothing for resonating materials. We decided to treat this gap of the acoustic industry, as a room for innovation, proposing a sustainable, more performing, fully engineerable, lighter, customizable, and cheaper solution. The patented technology we developed can be applied in the construction of most musical instruments, speakers, speaker cases, HIFI systems, headphones, hear phones, passive amplifiers, accessories (e.g. mobile cases), panels and walls for environmental acoustics and even more applications in the field of acoustics. As proof of concept, thanks to this technology we created two violins and a bass amplifier made out of silk, spider silk and carbon fibre, which conquered the attention of World’s media and received more than 100 publications around the world including Wired, BBC, The Times, Al Jazeera, Huffington Post, etc. The relevance and the value of these prototypes have been certified by world fame musicians and institutions such as Peter Sheppard Skaerved and the Royal Academy of Music, James Dyson School of Engineering, Academia Cremonensis and around 15 luthiers in Cremona. These prototypes have been recently showcased in several exhibitions: RCA show, Imperial College Grad show, Royal Society Summer Exhibition, New Scientist Live , V&A (London Design Week), Global Grad Show (Dubai Design Week), the International Student Innovation Award (in Central Saints Martin); Supermaterial, Lambrate, Milan Design Week, RCA Tokyo Design Lab, Musickmesse, FIM.
