About Sinagtala Center for Children and Women in Conflict

The problem we aim to address is the immediate social inclusion of marginalized groups such as women and children in conflict zones and challenged areas within the human-rights based framework. These sectors are often the direct targets of which the impacts of war, conflict, and disasters pressure their communities that commonly lead to social and economic distress. This stems from lack of efforts in formulating proactive tools, mechanisms, and policies and the lack of sustainable institutionalized grassroots approaches in solving socio-economic and humanitarian crises. Sinagtala is an independent non-profit organization that stewards leading initiatives and programs to provide direct responses to the needs and the protection of rights of vulnerable sectors. The organization recognizes the urgency of establishing community-based systems that bridge efforts of the civil society, government and other stakeholders in times of conflict. Sinagtala is the Filipino word for “starlight,” aptly named as the group’s vision is to bring sparks of hope to communities living in dark and conflicted times. Serving as an institutional nub for providing safe spaces and protection of women and children, Sinagtala aims to develop and operationalize the link between policy advocacy and community and grassroots building for localized sustainable development.
